Additional and Ongoing Projects

Stethoscope Trainer

A Bluetooth stethoscope that provides lung and esophagus sounds for high-fidelity auscultation training.
This device uses capacitive sensor technologies to provide sound localization while allowing other invasive operation training to be performed on the manikin.

VR Pelvic Trainer

A hybrid physical/virtual educational trainer that uses magnetic tracking to link a plastic skeletal pelvis to a 3D model.

The virtual image moves and rotates in space, allowing for the addition of related anatomic structures and interactive landmarks.

Clinic Communicator

A web-based, simple interface tool that allows doctors, nurses and staff to communicate from anywhere in the clinic.

Patient check-ins, labs and prescription orders are instantly received and processed, drastically decreasing wait time for patients and increasing overall clinic performance.

eschar_card.jpg

Escharotomy Arm

A part-task trainer designed to teach users proper Escharotomy techniques. The life like arm is burned and bloated, with cold, blue fingers.

After proper cutting, embedded sensors trigger heating elements that shifts the color back to normal, as the radial pulse returns.

Urinary Incontinence Study

A series of MRI and finite-element-model driven studies to determine the causes of urinary incontinence in young female athletes.

The study included locating the effects of physical stress on the bladder and tracking external forces vs leakage via peripheral devices.

Black Light Assessment Tool (BLAsT)

A novel approach to tracking and scoring surgical skills when assessing suture-based task trainers.

Black light reactive paint is applied in a grid on synthetic tissues, mimicking natural flow lines.

The paint is invisible under typical lighting, but under black light, shows how well the user followed expected suturing techniques.

FRS2 Dome Design

A video designed to outline the development of an all-encompassing trainer targeted at Fundamentals of Robotic Surgeries.

The trainer dome was developed at Florida Hospital and incorporates several unique training elements.

Trans1 AxialLif Procedure Video

A series of short patient education videos used to describe the surgical process of Trans1’s AxiaLif procedure.

The videos include general lumbar anatomy and isolation of specific areas that will be operated upon.

wii_card.jpg

Wii Trans-rectal Ultrasound Simulator

A design experiment to take commercial videogame technologies and adapt them for use as part task trainers.

In this case, a Wiimote with pool cue extension was used in conjunction with a silicone rectum to accurately simulate trans-rectal ultrasound probing of the prostate.

Comparative Throat Tube Study

A comparative throat tube study done in partnership with Smith’s Medical and driven on MRI data collected from cadaveric subjects.

The subjects were stratified by BMI, and fitted with several leading brands of throat tubes. The scanned data is converted to 3D for measurement of impacted anatomy.
